Eldest of three siblings who served in WWII (Dardanella, Ernest and Margaret), Corporal Dardanella Edith McRae (Service No:91360) enlisted in the WAAAF on 18 March 1942 at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne as an Aircraftwoman I - mustered as Cook's Assistant, re mustered as Messwoman. Corporal McRae was attached to Melbourne Wireless/Telegraphic Station at Discharge on 2 August 1945.
Dardy was born in Warracknabeal, Victoria in 1916, fourth of seven children of Roderick (William) Seaman McRae (b1883 in Ararat, Victoria) and Florence (Flora) Myrtle Millstead (b1891 in Geelong, Victoria). William and Flora married in 1908 in Warracknabeal, where they settled and raised their family. William was a Labourer in 1914 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:1660), and served in Gallipoli, where he was WiA, resulting in amputation of his leg. William returned to Warracknabeal, where he worked as a Labourer until his death in 1926. Flora died in 1929.
Dardy was a Textile Worker (Weaver at Valley Mills) in 1942 when she enlisted in the Air Force. In 1949 in Hobart, Tasmania she married John (Jack) Frederick Charles Oakes (b1902 in Queenstown, Tasmania) - Jack served in the RAAF (Sergeant; Service No:57986). Dardy and Jack lived in Hobart before settling in Franklin, where they raised their family and Jack worked as a Labourer and then as a Cellarman until his death in 1963. Dardy died in 1988.
