Charles left Australia on board A 30 Borda on 12 January 1916, transferring from the 27th Battalion to the 10th on 28 February at Serapeum in Egypt prior to proceeding to France on 9 December. He was wounded at the Somme on 25 February 1917, sustaining a severe injury to the sciatic nerve due to being shot in the right thigh. Charles was sent to the Duchess Westminster Hospital in England on 27 February for treatment, but there was no improvement to the loss of power in his foot. He had been promoted to Lieutenant on 17 March while hospitalised. Due to the lack of improvement to the sciatic nerve injury Charles returned to Australia on the Miltiades on 4 May and was discharged as medically unfit at Keswick on 10 December. A pension of 4 pounds per fortnight from 25 December was granted to Charles. He died on 20 December 1986.
