George Gavin was from Crows Nest near Toowoomba. He enlisted at 17, underage as the first of 5 brothers to serve in WW1. He was with the 12/5th Light Horse serving in the Middle East and not repatriated until 1919 at the age of 21 suffering malaria and the tremors. He was also shot and the bullet killed his horse but a year is missing from his file. His 3 brothers also enlisted in the 5th Light Horse- Stephen (16) Patrick Joseph 'Joe' (17) and John Joseph 'Jack'. Jack went onto serve with the Anzac Provost Corps in England, then as a Gunner with the 1st Field Artillery. James, the oldest brother (29) was with the 31st Bn AIF embarking after Egypt training at Marseilles 23/6/16 and killed at Fromelles 19/7/16- he is buried at a Rue Petillon CWGC. - Louise Coman, George's grand-neice & history teacher
