John joined the 31st Battalion and left from Melbourne on HMT Wandilla on 9 November 1915 and early in 1916 proceeded to France with his unit. He was wounded in action in France on 25 July 1916, sustaining a gunshot wound to the right leg for which treatment was provided by a field hospital. This wound led to synovitis and necessitated hospitalisation at the 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell , England in November. John was hospitalised again in Delhi with cellulitis and bronchitis in November 1917.
A series of offences including involvement in a fray, absent with out leave whilst on active duty, striking an officer of the Military Police, being in possession of a gambling kit and falsifying his pay book led to John’s imprisonment after a Court Martial trial and to his return to Australia from England. He was discharged on 7 December 1918 as medically unfit.
