Biography contributed by John Edwards

"THE LATE GUNNER W. J. HOY.

Mrs. J. H. Fairey, of Truro, recently received the sad intelligence that her eldest son, Gunner W. J. Hoy, had died at Tidworth Hospital, England. Gunner Hoy left Adelaide last March, and was at the Bulford Training School, England, when he was suddenly seized with an attack of cerebro-spinal meningitis and died on October 13. Gunner Hoy was born at Exeter, and was a son of the well-known harbormaster, the late Captain Hoy, of Port Germein. He was educated at Port Pirle, and spent most of his time there. He was well known and highly respected, and liked by all with whom he came in contact. Prior to enlisting Gunner Hoy was in charge of the steam tug Reliance at Port Pirie. Gunner Hoy left a widow and two young sons, at present in Victoria. He was a brother of Mr. J. E. Hoy, Port Augusta; Mrs. G. Sandery, Alberton; and Mrs. R. Jesser, of the Burra." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 25 Nov 1916 (nla.gov.au)
