Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Philip Kelly was awarded a Military Medal on the following recommendation, 'This N.C.O. displayed great devotion to duty and courage on the occasion of the attack on POLYGON WOOD on 26th September 1917. On one occasion he rushed over to a captured 'pill-box' and took charge of the prisoners, also bringing back a machine gun. On another occasion he attacked an enemy machine gun at close quarters and put it out of action. His conduct throughout the engagement was most exemplary.'

His three brothers also served, 6034 Pte William George Avenel Kelly, 1st Battalion AIF, had his left leg amputated after being wounded during September 1917 and returned to Australia, September 1918. 21274 Sapper Stanley James Kelly, Wireless Squadron and 2685 Pte Frank Kelly, 55th Battalion AIF, both returned to Australia during 1919.
