Biography

"SIGNALLER JAMES J. JORDAN, 38th BATTALION, who died of illness at Capetown on the 23rd July.

Word has been received by Mrs. A. Jordan, 28 Havelock-street, Bendigo, that her son, Signaller James J. Jordan, of the 38th Battalion, died of illness at Capetown, South Africa, on 23rd July. Deceased was ill when the transport arrived at Capetown. and he was put off and admitted to the hospital there. He was only 23 years of age. He was a native of Bendigo. and attended the Marist. Bros. School. He was later a prominent member of the Bendigo Rowing Club. Five years ago he went to Fiji, where he entered the occupation of a planter. After the war broke out he returned to Bendigo to enlist, and some three months or so ago he joined the A.I.F., and became a member of the 38th Bendigo Battalion. Signaller Jordan, who is the first member of the Bendigo Battalion to lose his life, was well known locally, and the death of such a fine young fellow is greatly regretted. General sympathy has been expressed for the bereaved mother and family." - from the Bendigo Bendigonian 03 Aug 1916 (nla.gov.au)
