He was born in 1882 on Dulwich Avenue, Dulwich, South Australia.
He enlisted in the army at 33 years old on the 21st of January 1915.
Botting was part of the 10th battalion, one of the first infantry units raised for the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) during the WW1. The Battalion was recruited in South Australia, and together with the 9th, 11th and 12th Battalions, they formed the 3rd Brigade.
