Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

John Henry GANNON, (Service Number 4722) was born on 27 May 1892, in Burrowa (now called Boorowa). Eight years before enlisting in the AIF, he began working at the Railways on 26 October 1908, in the Traffic Branch. By January 1910, he was a junior porter, and by May 1913, he was promoted to a porter, and was working in Sydney. On 27 January 1916, he left to join the AIF, at the age of 23.

On 20 September 1917, he was killed in action in Belgium, and is commemorated at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.

John Henry GANNON (Service Number 4722) was born on 27th May 1892, in Burrowa (now called Boorowa). He began working for the Railways on 26th October 1908 in the Traffic Branch. By January 1910, he was a junior porter, and by May 1913, he was promoted to a porter, and was working in Sydney. On 27th January 1916, he left to join the AIF, at the age of 23.

He embarked at Alexandria (Egypt) on 28th May 1916 to join the British Expeditionary Force. He disembarked at Plymouth on 7th June 1916. He left England to reinforce the 17th Battalion in Belgium on 10th September 1916. On 11th November 1916, he was taken to hospital in France, for sore feet. His feet continued to be an issue, and he was admitted to hospital in England on 20th November with trench feet. After his stay in hospital, he was discharged to furlough in Dartford on 12th January 1917.

On 3rd February 1917, he resumed duty, marching out to the No. 4 Command Depot in Wareham. He marched in at Havre on 16th June 1917, He re-joined his battalion in early July.

On 20th September 1917, he was killed in action in Belgium. He is commemorated at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.

His mother, as his next of kin, was issued the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service.
