Frederick left Adelaide on the A 70 Ballarat on 12 August 1916 and proceeded to France from England on 16 October 1917. While fighting in France he was wounded on 2 separate occasions in 1918 – on 6 February and 29 April. However, his war service record fails to provide any details of these incidents. Frederick served the remainder of the war in France then returned to Australia on the Ulysses and was discharged on 16 October 1919.
