Eric was the eighth of nine children of George Porter Manttan (b1864 in Brisbane, QLD) and Mary Elizabeth Turton (b1868 in Brisbane, QLD). George (a Brass Moulder) and Mary married in 1888 in Brisbane, QLD where they settled and raised their family. 

Eric enlisted in the Militia in November 1928, serving as a Private (Service No:127028) with 26 Infantry Battalion. He was a Labourer in Brisbane in 1939 when he married Claire Rosalie Nicholls (b1919 in Brisbane, QLD). Eric was working as a Truck Driver when he enlisted in the RAAF in August 1942. He was a Leading Aircraftman (Service no:78167) attached to Canteen Services when he was Discharged in February 1945. Eric and Claire Divorced (Claire remarried and moved to the USA), and in 1945 Eric married Eileen Molloy (b1911 in Toowoomba, QLD) - Eileen also served in the RAAF (Aircraftwoman; Service No:101184).

Eric and Eileen settled in Tooowoomba QLD where Eric was a Dry Cleaner. Eileen died in 1965 and in 1979 in Cleveland, Brisbane QLD Eric remarried to Elsie Ward (b1911 in London, England). Eric died in 1998 and Elsie in 2003.
