99 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 30th July 1924, Private Thomas Henry Winterbine, 56th Battalion (Reg No-230A), coal trimmer from the Oriental Hotel, Carrington, New South Wales and 145 Gipps Street, Carrington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 36. ANGLICAN 1-72. 109.


Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 16th May 1888 as TOM H to Thomas Daniel and Sarah Winterbine of Gipps Street, Carrington, New South Wales; husband of Winifred Mabel Winterbine nee Wallis (married 1920, Wickham, N.S.W., remarried to William Arthur Richards 1938, Newcastle, N.S.W., died possibly 19.8.1988, CATHOLIC 2-61. 51), Tom enlisted on the 22nd November 1915 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Wounded in action - 2.4.1917 (GSW both legs, mild).

Admitted to hospital 8.4.1917.

Granted leave to England from the 4.10.1918 to the 23.10.1918.

Tom returned home on the 19th July 1919, being discharged on the 4th September 1919.

Also transferred to the 56th Battalion, who arrived home on the 26th June 1919. Tragically, John took his own life on the 20th June 1931, age-54. Resting at ANGLICAN 2-113. 71. I submitted an application to DVA May 2020 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at his marked gravesite, and this was accepted September 2021. Plaque placed at gravesite - 12.2.2023. Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance January 2023. Officially commemorated – https://connect.dva.gov.au/.../viewCommemoration.html...

Mr. Winterbine’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates and the Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies at Tom’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother George Henry (born 25.12.1881, Carrington, New South Wales, horse driver from Gipps Street, Carrington, New South Wales, enlisted 13.9.1915, 30th Battalion, Reg No-2189, admitted to hospital 5.8.1918 (severe trench fever), RTA 9.9.1919 with wife Julia, 10th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, died 8th March 1958, age-76, not officially commemorated) resting at the cemetery in an unmarked grave. ANGLICAN 3-200. 37.
