Leading Aircraftman Arthur Alexander Barby (Service No:125420) enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman I on 15 December 1942 at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne - mustered as General Hand. ACI Barby served in the Northern Territory in 1943 (promoted to LAC in August) at Birdum, Tindal, Bird Ant Creek and Darwin before embarking from Sydney for Aitape on 12 August 1944. Before returning to Melbourne in September 1945, LAC Barby served in Morotai, in Leyte and Mindora in the Philippines, and in Balikapan. LAC Barby was attached to AF HQS (Records) at Discharge on 15 January 1946.
Arthur was born in Lismore, Victoria in 1917, youngest of ten children of John (Jack) William Barby (b1863 in Inverleigh, Victoria) and Jane Dunn (b1877 at Leigh Cree via Moorabool, Victoria). Jack (a Labourer) and Jane married in 1893 in Foxhow, where they settled and raised their family and Jack was a Labourer and Farmer. Jack died in 1921, shortly after moving to Colac, and following his death, Jane remarried and moved to Melbourne.
Arthur worked as a Press Operator for Wilson Bros in Melbourne before enlisting in the RAAF, and following his Discharge, returned to Melbourne where he worked as a Tinsmith. In the late 1950s he married Kathleen (Kate) Theresa Scott (b1921 in Melbourne, Victoria) - they Divorced and Kate remarried. Arthur worked as a Labourer in Melbourne until retirement in the mid 1980's. Arthur died in 1996.
