Thomas Phillip Prince was born in Middlesex, England in 1858, he joined the Royal Navy as a lad, and took part in the Ashanti war (1873) and at the bombardment of Alexandria and operations at Tel-el-Kebir in Egypt (1882). He came to New South Wales during 1885 and served for many years in the Railway Department. At 58 years he joined the A.I.F. in the 1st World War, and as a member of the 2nd Australian Light Railway Operating Company he drove a train in the Ypres sector. He was returned to Australia with rheumitism during March 1918.
He had five sons serve in WW1, three with the AIF, one with the RAN and one with a British Rifle Brigade. One son, Sgt. F. G. Prince. died on active service in WW2 in Darwin during 1942. Mr. Prince was reported to have never missed an Anzac Day march before 1938.
