Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

A Forgotten Digger who suffered during The Great War, resting peacefully but in an unmarked grave at Sandgate Cemetery.

67 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 2nd February 1954, Private Cecil Francis Coughlin, 42nd Battalion (Reg No-2787), labourer from Mitchell, Queensland and 19 Union Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CATHOLIC 2-44. 71.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article134905612 - funeral notice does not state service.

Born at Inverell, New South Wales on the 9th May 1893 to Edward John and Emma Coughlin (MILLER) of Swanbrook, Elsmore via Inverell, New South Wales, Cecil enlisted October 1916 at Toowoomba, Queensland.

Wounded in action - 31.7.1917 (mutiple GSW wounds, left hand, left leg, severe), Cecil was invalided home February 1918, being discharged on the 21st March 1918.

I have not located Mr Coughlin’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

Cecil had been resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so November 2019 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to be placed at the gravesite to restore honour and dignity to Mr Coughlin.

Lest We Forget.
