A Family of Service
Leslie Frederick Jones was my Grandfather, he graduated from the Canadian Air Training Scheme as a Navigator, his nickname,'Smokey Jones'. He joined WW2 with the Bombers Squadron and then flew Lancasters and Beauforts. He was a proud Australian, serving in the RAAF for more than 20 years of service. After the War he served in Leadership roles and was proud of his two eldest sons who both enlisted in Military Services . RAN Leslie Frederick Jnr (born 1937) and RAAF Robert Athol (born 1942). His Grandson (SGT Jason Jones) is currently serving in RAR 2 and has been serving for 26 years to date.
After leaving the RAAF, Poppy JONES could not settle and travelled to the US and formed a friendship with Joe Jackson (Rockstar, Michael Jackson's father) sharing a meal with the Jackson family, he also frequented Fiji which became his second home. He was a keen photographer and movie (8mm) maker, spending time with his grandchildren, children filming family moments. Tragically his last days were spent in a Nursing Home (Beenleigh) Qld and then Ipswich Qld where he died from Alzheimer's (Dementia). He died Aged 82 with myself and his son Robert by his side. Lest We Forget.. Not 1 Austraian War Hero but a family of Australian War Heroes!
