During 1928c James married Dorothy Mary McCreary in Victoria
Post war he was appointed as the Asistant Superintendant of the Melbourne Womens Hospital and later the Melbourne Children's Hospital.
After moving to Queensland he was appointed as a doctor with the Royal Flying Doctor Service during 1929-1930 being only the second ever flying doctor following the retirement of the first doctor.
After leaving the Royal Flying Doctor he was appointed the Superintendent of Monto District Hospital, Queensland
