Youngest of three brothers (Reg and Trevor) who also served in the Army and Navy in WWII, Leading Seaman Douglas Frederick Royce Collins (Service Nos:V167326; Pm/V460) initially served in the ACMF (12 June 1942 - 23 February 1943) in the ACMF as a Private attached to Special Base Workshops). Leading Seaman Collins served in the RAN from 1 March 1943 to 28 July 1945, and was attached to HMAS Lonsdale at Discharge.

Douglas was born in Bairnsdale, Victoria in 1920, second of five children of Frederick (Fred) Thomas Albert Collins (b1892 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Margery (Millie) Lily Gray (nee Rowe; b1892 in Bairnsdale, Victoria). Millie was a Divorcee with a young son when she and Fred (a Mechanic) married in 1918 in Bairnsdale. Fred and Millie lived in Melbourne, Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Queenscliff and Barwon Heads in Victoria, where they raised their family and Fred was a Motor Mechanic. Fred and Millie retired to Southport QLD in the late 1950s.

Douglas worked with his older brothers as a Fisherman in Queenscliff and Lorne, and from Flinders Island in Tasmania before enlisting for service in 1942. Following his Discharge, he was a Fisherman in Cairns and Townsville, and in 1951 in Wynnum , Brisbane QLD he married Dorothy Alice Peachey (b1921 in Wynnum, Brisbane, QLD) - Dorothy was a Teacher. The couple settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Douglas was a Fisherman before moving to Evans Head in New South Wales in the 1960s - Douglas was a Fisherman. By the early 1970s Douglas and Dorothy had settled in Tweed Heads in New South Wales, and Douglas was a Wholesaler. Douglas died in 2003 and Dorothy in 2004.
