Derrick, quartermaster on the Orient liner Orama when she was sunk on June 8, 1940, and picked up by the enemy after three quarters of an hour in the sea, has been repatriated because of ill-health.
The Orama had gone to Narvik to assist in the evacuation of troops but was not needed and was on her way out when spotted by an enemy plane. A cruiser and three destroyers were sent to attack her. She was sunk by gunfire.
Derrick was on the bridge during the action. He said that 19 men lost their lives out of a total complement of 299 officers and men, remainder being taken prisoner.
