Biography contributed by Sonia Washburn

During WW2 Lionel was in the merchant navy. He worked on board ships that transposted military supplies, vehicles and aircraft from Melbourne to South East Asia and Hong Kong. He was enlisted into the Navy during his voyages where his vessel was endangered by enemy conflict. He would travel in convoy with US Navy ships which would protect the transpost vessel from enemy attacks.
