Born in 1880 in Yorkshire England, James was the eldest of six children of James Horatio Utting Snr (b1856 in London, England) and Therese Allison Haynes (b1851 in London). James Snr (a Merchant) and Therese (a Milliner) married in Yorkshire, England in 1880). They settled in London where James Snr was a Wine and Spirit Merchant. In the 1901 Census, James Snr and Theresa were living in Walthamstow in Essex - James Snr was an Insurance Agent, James Jnr an Apprentice in the Mercantile Marines, daughter Honora was a Pupil Teacher, and Richard, Alexander and Philip were Scholars. By the 1911 Census, James Snr was living alone and stated his occupation as Lecturer; Therese was living in Myanmar with James Jnr and his family, Honoria had married and Philip, Alexander and Philip had emigrated to Australia. James was a Master Mariner and River Pilot in 1908 when he married Elna Haswell (b1886 in Mawlamyine, Myanmar) in Rangoon, Burma. James' mother Therese joined them in Myanmar before 1911, and by 1931 (some sources indicate 1936) James and his family joined his Mother and two brothers in Fremantle WA - brother Philip had lived in Sydney NSW and was KiA in WWI.
