John William Richardson in 1893 was born in Dublin, South Australia. Next of kin was his mother, Mrs Esther Richardson who lived at Modbury, South Australia. Before the war he worked as a Carpenter. He enlisted in 17 July 1916 and embarked 28 August 1916 on board the HMAT Anchises.

He served with the 48th Battalion on the Western Front in France. He returned to Australia in 1919 and was discharged 26th December that year.

Richardson lived a long life, dying at the age of 97 on 22nd September 1990. He is buried at the Dudley Park Cemetery and commemorated on the Loyal Men of Modbury Honour Roll.
