He was 35 years of age when he enlisted and his parents were both deceased. He was living in Herberton, Queensland, at the time, and enlisted in Townsville, Queensland.

His older brother, 2085 Trooper Houston Stewart Bryson 3rd Australian Battalion Imperial Camel Corps, died of wounds in Cairo, Egypt on 15 November 1917, aged 41.

Alex was made a Sergeant in the original 41st Battalion and was wounded on three separate occasions before he was killed in action on 8 August 1918.

He was said to have been killed by a shell on the right bank of the Somme, near Hamel. The Battalion had was making an advance at the time and Bryson was said to have been buried where he fell. His service file states he was buried in an isolated grave about three quarters of a mile west of Hancourt.
