The youngest of four children, Mavis was born in 1918 in Fremantle WA to Francis O'Brien Arbuthnott (b1884 in Madras, India) and Winifred Elizabeth Mary Patricia Diedrich (b1890 in Madras, India0. Francis (a Labourer) and Winifred married in Fremantle WA in 1911. The couple settled in Fremantle to raise their family and Francis worked as a Labourer and Engine Driver. Winifred died in 1919.
Mavis worked as a Packer and Telephonist in Fremantle WA, and in 1942 enlisted in the AAMWS (Private; Service No:W96841). Mavis was attached to 2nd/1st Australian General Hospital when she Discharged in 1945 to enlist in the AAWS(AIF) as a Private (Service No:WF33296). Mavis served in New Guinea (12 September 1943 - 27 June 1944) and Bougainville (21 January 1945 - 19 December 1945) and in 1946 was Mentioned in Dispatches for 'Exceptional service in the field in SWP Area' (Australian War Memorial). Mavis Discharged in May 1947. Brothers Frank and Colin served in the RAAF in WWII.
Returning to Fremantle WA, in 1948 Mavis married Jack Clifford Bartlett (b1915 in Bunbury WA) - Jack served in the Army in WWII, and was working as a Lumper (Wharf Labourer) in Fremantle. Mavis and Jack settled in Fremantle WA where Jack worked as a Lumper until his death in 1974. Mavis remarried in 1976 - Philip Gillan (b1920 in Fremantle WA). Philip - a Widower - had served in the Army in WWII. Philip died in 1982 and Mavis in 1986.
