Vivian joined the 50th Battalion and with his unit embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A 35 Berrima on 16 December 1916. His battalion proceeded to France on 14 June 1917. Vivian was shot in the chest on 26 September and admitted to the 61st Casualty Clearing Station where he died 3 days later.
Private Vivian Robinson was buried at Dozinghem British Cemetery in France. His Victory Medal, Memorial Plaque and Memorial Scroll were sent to his mother Charlotte between April and October 1923. His personal effects had been sent to her in September 1918. Charlotte was granted a pension of 2 pounds per fortnight from 16 December 1917.
The following death notice appeared in The Advertiser of Thursday, 8 November 1917: “Died of wounds in France, Private Vivian Robinson, dearly –loved nephew of Mrs. A. Veedman, Highgate. One of God’s brightest and best. His duty nobly done.”
