Ernest Kenneth Carter
Ernest Kenneth Carter, Born and educated in Brisbane. The son of Helen and William Thomas Carter of "Millmount", Woodstock Road, Toowong, Brisbane. Enlisted September 20th, 1914, and left for Broad Meadows 20th November,1914. Embarked from Melbourne 22nd December, 1914, per Ceramic, arriving in Egypt February, 1915, and went into camp at Heliopolis. Left for Gallipoli, and landed25th May, 1915. Fought at Quinns Post and Popes Hill. Was promoted to Sergeant on 4th June, 1915, and evacuated with enteric fever 28th July, 1915, to Egypt. Returned to Gallipoli 3rd November, 1915, and was promoted to 2nd Lieut. 16th March, 1916. Went with his battalion to Lemnos Island, then to Egypt. Sent to France, landing at Marseilles May, 1916. Was promoted to Lieut. November, 1916, and to Captain20th March, 1917. Was awarded the Military Cross in 1917. Served at Armentieres, Ypres, St. Eloi, Wytschaete, Passchendale, Messines, Warneton, Pozieres, Moquet Farm, Gonducourt, Bullecourt, and was finally wounded and lost right leg at Hamel, 4th July, 1918. Returned to Australia, arriving in Brisbane May 20th, 1919.
