11 Oct 1917: | Honoured Military Medal, 'At HERMIES on 9th April 1917 during our attack on that village. This N.C.O.'s work prior to the attack was good. Right through the attack, and especially against an enemy strong post he showed a complete disregard to personal danger. He led his men to the final assault with determination and courage, and then systematically cleared the village of any remaining enemy. An Original Anzac who served bravely during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
74 years ago today, on the 5th October 1947, Sergeant James Emmett Bourke (M.M.), 2nd Battalion (Reg No-717), miner from Balfour Road, Rose Bay, New South Wales and 155 Barcom Avenue, Darlinghurst, Sydney, N.S.W. and Newcastle? N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. CATHOLIC 2-54. 3.
No funeral or death notice located.
Born at Glen Innes, New South Wales on the 27th October 1893 to Patrick and Rose S Bourke; husband of Veronica F M Bourke nee? (married?, died 1976) of 101 Emily Street, Marks Point, N.S.W. and Flat 34, Block F, Parkway Avenue, Merewether, N.S.W., James enlisted August 1914 at Randwick, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 26.9.1915 (not stated, possibly neurasthenia), 19.7.1917 (scabies), 3.8.1917 (scabies), 2.9.1917 (septic sores).
Awarded Military Medal 25.5.1917.
James returned home March 1918, being discharged on the 7th June 1918.

Mr. Bourke’s name has been inscribed on the Emmaville Public School First World War Honour Roll (photo, unveiled on the 7th July 1920, 124 names inscribed, 26 Fallen) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at James’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
