Private Walter Frederick Williams (Service No:WX20235) enlisted in the Australian Army on 2 January 1942 and served with 16th Infantry Battalion (many of whom were recruited from the WA Goldfields). Private Williams served in Darwin NT (19 March 1943 - 21 November 1944) and in New Guinea (21 November 1944 - 2 April 1945 and 14 July 1945 - 13 December 1945) before being Discharged on 2 January 1946.
Born in 1907 in Coolgardie WA, Walter was the fifth of eight children of Richard Walters Williams (b1870 at Pleasant Creek, Stawell, Victoria) and May Emma Maria Gilham (b1877 at Pleasant Creek in Stawell, Victoria). Richard (a Coach Proprietor) and May married in 1901 in Coolgardie WA and lived there and in Wagin, Perth, and Jindong nr Busselton where Richard worked as a Labourer, Settler and Prospector.
Walter worked in Kalgoorlie as a Miner and Truck Driver prior to enlistment in the AIF. In Perth in 1942 he married Jessie May Rawlinson (b1916 at Geeralyng Siding nr Narrogin, WA) - Jessie was a Housemaid in Narrogin. Following his Discharge, Walter and Jessie settled in Perth where Walter worked as a Labourer. Walter died in January 1993 and Jessie in September that year.
