Robert was the fourth of six children of Thomas Nobbs (b1883 in Durham, England) and Alice Jessie Cowan Holbrook (b1891 in Caboolture, QLD). Thomas was four years of age when he immigrated with his parents and siblings, arriving in Maryborough QLD in 1888 on board the Merkara. Thomas was a Labourer at Bunya Creek in Wide Bay, QLD in 1916 when he and Jessie married. Thomas and Jessie lived in Bunya Creek where Thomas was a Labourer before moving to Gympie in the 1930's where Thomas was a Dairy Farmer.
Robert was a Labourer in Gympie QLD when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1941. He served as a Private (Service Nos:QX37890/Q105832) and was attached to 2/9 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in 1946. Brother Herbert Thomas (Private; Service Nos:QX37902/Q16093) and several Brothers and Sisters-in-Law also served in WWII.
Robert worked as a Labourer in Kybong via Gympie and lived with his parents in Gympie until the 1960s. He became a Linesman in the 1950s and in 1963 Robert married Vera Jessie Carswell (b1920 in Gympie, QLD). They settled in Gympie where Robert worked as a Linesman. Robert died in 2005 and Vera in 2007.
