Lieutenant Harold Roy Fredericks (Service Nos:V58744/VX102132) initially served in the Militia (Service No:VE445829) from May to December 1939 before enlisting in the ACMF on 30 July 1941 as a Corporal attached to 2nd/23rd Infantry Battalion. Promoted to Sergeant, he served in the Northern Territory (13 May 1942 to 20 September 1942) and was 'in the field' at Adelaide River, NT on 16 June 1942 when he enlisted in the AIF. Sergeant Fredericks completed diverse training, including Map Reading and Camouflage, and was again posted to Darwin NT (21 February 1943 to 25 June 1943) where he was promoted to Lieutenant. Lt Fredericks served in New Guinea (25 October 1943 to 8 February 1944) and Borneo (25 September 1945 to 22 February 1946) and was attached to 2nd/23rd Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 3 April 1946.
Roy was born in Portland, Victoria in 1921, eldest son of Ernest Roy Fredericks (b1898 in Portland, Victoria) and Alice Rosina Artis (b1899 at Port Fairy, Victoria). Ernest (a Fisherman) and Alice married in 1920 and settled in Portland, where they raised their family and Ernest was a Fisherman.
Roy worked in Portland as a Shop Assistant, Ticket Writer and Storeman before enlisting in the Army. Following his Discharge, he was in Sydney, NSW in 1948 when he married Enid Keetch (b1926 in Gloucestershire, England) - Enid had immigrated with her parents in 1930, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Barrabool. Roy and Enid settled in Corowa, NSW where they raised their family and Roy was a Cordial Manufacturer. In the mid 1970s they were in Portland, Victoria (where Enid was a Teacher) before returning to NSW and settling at Budgewoi. Enid died in 1989 and Roy in 2012.
