Private Hugh Collett (Service Nos:WX40911/W23868) served with 28th Infantry Battalion in the ACMF (7 January 1942 - 1 December 1943) and the AIF (2 December 1943 - 8 January 1946).
Born in 1914 in Perth WA, Hugh was the sixth of nine children of Hugh Collett Snr (b1882 in Guernsey, Channel Islands) and Esther Mary Veronica Hall Jackson (b1881 in Perth, WA). Hugh Snr immigrated in 1884, arriving in Fremantle WA with his parents and siblings on board the Glen Goil. Hugh Snr (a Librarian) and Esther married in 1903 in Perth WA, where they settled and raised their family. Hugh Snr worked as a Librarian, Clerk, Library Assistant and Labourer, and served in both WWI and WWII.
Hugh worked as a Miner in Kalgoorlie WA and in 1941 married Martha Matilda Meehan (b1902 in York, WA). Following his Discharge, Hugh and Martha lived in Trayning WA where Hugh was a Railway Repairer before moving to Claremont, Fremantle WA in the early 1950s where Hugh was a Storekeeper. Martha died in 1985 and Hugh in 2006.
