Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

George was the second of eight children of Henry George Mainwaring (born 1868 in Deloraine, Tasmania) and Minnie Elizabeth Allen (born 1871 in Port Sorrell, Tasmania). Henry was a Farmer when he married Minnie in 1890 in Ulverstone, Tasmania. George and Minnie moved to Penguin with their family by 1899 and Henry was a Farmer and Justice of the Peace. He died in 1942.

George was a Farmer at Penguin, Tasmania when he enlisted in the AIF in May 1915. He served as a Private with 15th Infantry Battalion 6th Reinforcements and was WiA at Gallipoli in August 1915 - a Bomb Wound to his arm and thigh. George was Discharged in March 1916, and his return home is described by The North Western Advocate and Emu Bay Times (Saturday 27 November 1915, p2) 'The Penguin Railway Station was densely thronged on the arrival of the mail train on Thursday evening, to tender a welcome to Private George Mainwaring on his return from Gallipoli, where he was wounded by a bomb explosion on August 7 in the memorable charge at Anzac...... The speaker then called for three cheers for the returned wounded soldier, which were raised to the echo, after which the National Anthem was sung, and cheers given'. Brothers Oliver Lawrence (Driver, Service No:1548) and William John (Corporal, Service No:5140) also served in WWI. Brothers-in-Law Ernest (Vic) Victor Shepherd (Private, Service No:588) and Lewis Norman Shepherd (Private, Service No:5229), Sister-in-Law Muriel Helen Wilson Shepherd (Staff Nurse, AANS) also served in WWI.

In December that year, George married Doris Winifred Shepherd (born 1891 in Ulverstone, Tasmania) in Penguin, Tasmania where they settled and George worked as a Labourer and Mail Contractor.

Following Doris' death in 1937, George married Bernice Hope Vincent Boddington (born 1896 in New Zealand) in 1940 in Burnie, Tasmania. Bernice had been a Teacher at Church of England Girls' Grammar School in Newtown, Victoria. George was a Salesman and representative of the Potato Marketing Board. In September 1940 George enlisted in the ACMF and was a Staff Sergeant (Service No:T41954) when he was Discharged in July 1945.

George died in January 1948, and Bernice moved back to Victoria and remarried.
