Private Percival Herbert Gannaway ( Service Nos:394/162) enlisted in the AIF on 6 January 1916 - his father Herbert (Private; Service Nos:1708/8863) was already on Active Service with 28th Infantry Battalion, younger brother Victor (Private; Service No:7366) enlisted in 1917, and youngest brother Clifford served in WWII. Private Gannaway had previously served in the Militia with 85th Infantry Battalion, and was attached to 44th Infantry Battalion on 6 June 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for England on board HMAT A29 Suevic. Private Gannaway saw service on the Western Front (France and Belgium), and on 11 June 1917 was WiA at Messines, then embarking from England for Fremantle on 26 September 1917 on board HT A30 Suevic. Private Gannaway was attached to 44th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 1 December 1917. Private Gannaway re enlisted for Home Service with the Miltary Police, serving from 24 April to 3 June 1919.
Percy was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1895, eldest of seven children of Herbert Wilfred Gannaway (b1872 in Gloucestershire, England) and Mary Ann Bradley (b1872 in Kent, England). Herbert immigrated in 1881, arriving in Melbourne with his parents and siblings on board the Superb, and Mary arrived in Melbourne in 1884 on board the John Elder. Herbert and Mary married in Melbourne in 1894, and moved to Western Australia in 1898, settling in the Albany district. Herbert was a Farmer and Postmaster (Torbay Junction, Martyup Siding, Bornholm), and served in WWI (Private: Service Nos:1708/8863). Following his Discharge, Herbert and Mary lived at Young's Siding via Albany, where he was a Horticulturalist.
Percy was a Farmer at Bornholm via Albany in 1916 when he enlisted in the Army, and following his Discharge returned to Bornholm before joining the WA Police Force as a Constable. In 1923 in Katanning, Percy married his first wife Isabella May Clegg (nee Waters; b1896 in Albany, Western Australia). Percy and Isabella lived in Collie and Perth before they divorced, and both remarried - Percy in 1928 in Perth to Rachel Lydia Bagley (b1907 in Yorkshire, England) - Rachel immigrated in 1927, arriving in Fremantle on board the Orama. Percy worked as a Police Constable (and Constable-in-Charge), including in Bunbury, Busselton, Albany, Mullewa, Toodyay and Perth - receiving recognition and awards for his work. In the early 1950s Percy and Rachel settled in Gosnells, where Percy died in 1958. Rachel died in 2001.
