Second of the four brothers who served in WWII (Keith, Edwin, James and Bruce), Sergeant Edwin Gerald Meredith (Service Nos:234392/T4914/TX11633) initially served in the Militia (24 March 1936 - 30 October 1937) as a Private attached to 12 Battalion Trench Mortar. On 22 September 1940 he enlisted in the ACMF as a Private attached to 6 Australian Field Regiment - Trade Group Clerk. By 10 August 1942 when he enlisted in the AIF, he was a Lance Sergeant attached to 6 Australian Field Regiment. Sergeant Meredith was attached to 16 Australian Infantry Training Battalion at Discharge on 29 May 1945.

Gerald was born in Launceston, Tasmania in 1917, second of four children (sons) of George Stewart Meredith (b1883 in Wellington, New Zealand) and Ethel Nancy Roxburgh (b1888 in Bathurst, New South Wales). George arrived in Hobart in 1906 on board the SS Warrimoo, and worked for the Launceston Maritime Board before being appointed as Secretary and Shipping Master to the Board in 1912. George and Ethel married in 1913 in Launceston, where they settled and raised their family and George was Secretary of the Launceston Marine Board.

Gerald started work as a Junior Clerk, and was a Clerk with Henry Bills & Co Invermay when he enlisted in the Army in 1940. Following his Discharge, in 1947 in Launceston, Gerald married Dorothy (Dot) Annie Riley (b1922 in Launceston, Tasmania) - Dot served in the WRANS (Leading Seaman - Writer; Service No:WR/1147). Gerald and Dot settled in Launceston, where they raised their family and Gerald worked as a Clerk until retirement, when they moved to Swansea. Dot died in 2013 and Gerald died in 2015.
