Elder of two brothers (Frank and Alfred) who served in WWII, Staff Sergeant Frank Herbert Charles Brownhill (Service Nos:V185381/VX82869) initially served in the ACMF (17 December 1941 - 12 August 1942) as a Private attached to 1 Australian Ordnance Field Park - graded Technical Clerk. Corporal Brownhill then enlisted in the AIF, and served in Darwin NT (26 October 1943 - 16 October 1944) with 1 Australian Infantry Troops Ordnance Field Park (AITOFP). In October 1944 Staff Sergeant Brownhill was detached to 7 Australian Ordnance Field Park, and was attached to 1 AITOFP at Discharge on 16 October 1945.
Frank was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1910, fourth of five children of Frederick (Fred) Alfred Brownhill (b1883 in Collingwood, Victoria) and Ethel May Brown (b1885 in Melbourne, Victoria). Fred was a Bootmaker when he and Ethel married in 1903 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family. Fred worked as a Bootmaker, Driver and Petrol Pump Attendant.
Frank started work as a Labourer in Melbourne, and was a Transport Driver in 1937 when he married Kathleen Florence Hogben (b1914 in Trafalgar, Victoria). Frank and Kathleen settled in Melbourne, where Frank was a Transport Driver in 1941 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, Frank and Kathleen lived in Melbourne, where Frank worked as a Driver, before moving to Pakenham in the late 1940s and then to Mt Eccles via Leongatha in the 1950s - Frank was Farmer. In the late 1960s Frank and Kathleen moved to Narre Warren, where Frank worked as a Salesman and Driver. Frank died in 2007 and Kathleen died in 2009.
