Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

95 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 9th November 1928, Private William John Brenock, 17th Battalion (Reg No-4366), engineer-grinder from "West May", The Avenue, Granville, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 38. CATHOLIC 1-28. 14.

William had died on the 7th November 1928 at the Kurri Kurri Hospital, N.S.W.

Born at Granville, New South Wales about 1890 to ? and Alice Eliza Smith, William enlisted on the 3rd January 1916 at the Sydney Town Hall, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A71 Nestor on the 9th April 1916.

Admitted to hospital at sea 29.5.1916 (influenza).

Admitted to hospital 21.4.1917 (tonsillitis), 16.3.1918 (bronchitis and influenza).

Wounded in action - 20.9.1917 (GSW both thighs, severe, Battle of the Menin Road Ridge), 12.8.1918 (shell abrasions to right ankle, mild).

Transferred to England 23.9.1918.

Embarked for Australia 25.1.1919.

William returned home on the 7th March 1919, being discharged medically unfit (bronchitis) on the 16th May 1919.

Mr. Brenock’s name has been inscribed on the Granville Australian Holy Catholic Guild Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

Service record states Died, 7/11/1928.
