William was the 2nd youngest son of William Alfred and Jane Anice Brittain (nee Taylor) of Sydney, NSW. 

His brother Bertie also served and both ended up in the Pay office of the Aust Pay Corp at the end of 1917.

Feb 1917 he is noted in his AIF file as being a Sgt. He was discharged in Oct 1918 as Sgt Brittain of 1st AAPC.
