Lance Corporal Roland Warwick Johnson (Service No:5044) enlisted in the AIF on 22 April 1917, and was a Private attached to 31st Infantry Battalion on 14 June 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Liverpool on board HMAT A20 Hororata. Private Johnson served on the Western Front, and was promoted to Lance Corporal with 41st Infantry Battalion on 14 January 1918. In 1919 L/Corporal Johnson was granted three months Leave with Pay to attend Scott & Son London (Drapery Trade), before embarking on 1 August 1919 from England on for Port Adelaide on board HT Argyllshire. L/Corporal Johnson was attached to 41st Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 24 October 1919. Older brother Thomas (Service No:991) was KiA in France in 1916, and daughter Patricia (Service No:QX61122) served in WWII.
Roland was born in Warwick, QLD in 1896, second of eight children on William Guard Johnson (b1868 in Warwick, QLD) and Edith Emmeline Merry (b1872 in Warwick, QLD). William and Edith married in 1894 and settled in Warwick on the Darling Downs, where they raised their family and Warwick was a Merchant (WG Johnson & Sons - General Merchants, Drapery and Hardware). William was involved in his local community - serving as a Justice on the Peace and member of the Warwick Town Council (and as Mayor in 1912). He was a Cemetery Trustee and President of the Traders' Association, and (a keen hosrseman) one of the founding members of the Warwick Coursing Club.
Roland worked as a Draper/Salesman for his father, becoming a Partner and Managing Director of WG Johnson & Sons (General Merchants - Grocery, Drapery and Hardware). In 1922 in Brisbane, Roland married Edith Maud Meggitt (b1896 in Brisbane, QLD), and settled in Warwick, where the couple raised their family and Roland was Managing Director/Merchant. In the late 1950s Roand and Edith moved to Brisbane, where Roland died in 1966, and Edith in 1975.
