John was the eldest of four children of Percival (Percy) Sloan (b1885 in Melbourne, Victoria) and second wife Kate Kenny (b1894 in Melbourne, Victoria). Percy - a Coppersmith - married Kate - a Boot Fitter - in 1921 in Melbourne, Victoria. Following Percy's death in 1939, Kate remained in Melbourne with ther children.

John was a Labourer in 1942 when he enlisted in the Australian Army, serving as a Private (Service No:V197961) with 6th Infantry Training Battalion. He was Discharged in March 1943 and was in Cowra NSW in July 1944 when he re-enlisted. John was a Private (Service No:VX146840) attached to 14th Infantry Training Battalion when he was Discharged in November 1944.

In 1945 John was working as a Scoopman (Coal Mines) in Warracknabeal, Victoria when he married Una Vivian Schmidt (b1924 in Warracknabeal, Victoria). John and Una settled in Warracknabeal where John worked as a Scoopman until the late 1950's when he bacame a Carpenter. In the late 1960s the family relocated to Portland, Victoria where John was a Builder. John died in 1982 and Una died in 2011.
