Ivan was the fourth of six children of Harry Henry Snell (b1885 in Devon, England) and Louisa Jane Willey (b1893 in Beverley, WA). Harry (a Fisherman in Devon before immigrating to WA) and Louisa married in 1911 in Perth, WA. The couple lived in Fremantle and Cannington WA where Harry was a Labourer. Both Harry and Louisa - who had a Poultry Farm - were killed in 1933 when they were electrocuted in their fowl yard.

Ivan was a Labourer when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1944. He was a Private (Service No:WX49133) attached to 66 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in September 1947.

Ivan was living in Boulder/Kalgoorlie WA and working as a Labourer in 1950 when he married Mona Durrans (b1933 in Meekatharra, WA). The couple lived in Cannington, Kalamunda and Nollamara where Ivan was a Buidlers' Labourer before retiring to Norseman WA. Ivan died in 1996 and Mona in 2007.
