Son of Richard E. Toomes and Mary Toomes of Sydney, NSW. Geoerge was raised as an orphan at an early age  by his uncle John Pitts and his wife of Murray Avenue, Newcastle, NSW. He had no siblings. His mother died and his father deserted both and was thought to be deceased
