Biography contributed

Son of Francis Mary HITCHENS, 49 Orr Street, Shepparton, Victoria.

Len is a veteran of the Second World War. Prior to enlisting in the Second Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in September 1942, Len worked in a grocery store.

Len served mainly in Bougainville in the Pacific as a signalman. He says his most memorable experience while serving was escorting Italian prisoners of war back to Italy by ship after the war ended. He then went to England and Scotland for some downtime before returning to Australia.

Len discharged in July 1947 and returned to his job at the grocery store. He later secured work at the SPC cannery as an engineer.

Len has been married twice and has 3 daughters (1 deceased) and 2 stepchildren (1 deceased). His wife Ursula currently lives in aged care.

When Len was younger, he played cricket and football. He also enjoyed rock ‘n’ roll dancing with Ursula at the local RSL Club.

Over the years, he reunited with fellow soldiers and attended yearly reunions. These days, Len likes reading and watching sport on TV.

Len credits his longevity to his determination, always being happy, enjoying a glass of whiskey every afternoon, and Ursula’s care.
