104 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 5th July 1920, 2nd Air Mechanic Leslie William Firth, Australian Flying Corps (Reg No-7354), motor mechanic and driver from the corner of Hunter & Union Streets, The Junction (Newcastle West), New South Wales and 365 Melville Street, The Junction, N.S.W., father of Gordon Leslie Firth, born 5.5.1911, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 10.2.1922, Merewether, N.S.W., age 10, buried with his mother, PRESBYTERIAN-11SW. 53, and Robert Eric Firth born 1.11.1915, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 25.6.1965, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., age 49, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 34. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 15 SE. 43.
Mr. Firth had died on the 3rd July 1920 at the Woodville Red Cross Home, Randwick, N.S.W. from pulmonary tuberculosis.
Born at Morpeth, New South Wales on the 1st March 1886 to William Edgar Charles Frederick, died 31.5.1946, Mater Hospital, Waratah, N.S.W., age 84, from High Street, West Maitland, N.S.W. and 9 Burwood Street, Merewether, N.S.W., and Dinah (Diana) Firth nee Soames, died 13.2.1915, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 49, sleeping at METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 15 SE. 43, from the corner of Hunter & Union Streets, The Junction (Newcastle West), New South Wales; husband of Annie Jane Firth nee Symes, married 1911, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1.6.1932, Merewether, N.S.W., age 45, sleeping at PRESBYTERIAN-11SW. 55, from 102 Merewether Street, Merewether, N.S.W., Les enlisted on the 5th January 1916 with the 7th Australian Field Company Engineers at Victoria Barracks, Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Star Of Victoria on the 31st March 1916.
Admitted to hospital 4.1.1917 (pleurisy), 26.10.1917 (pulmonary fibrosis).
Transferred to Australian Flying Corps 5.8.1917.
Commenced return to Australia 1.2.1918.
Les arrived home on the 22nd March 1918, being discharged medically unfit (suffering from pleurisy), on the 21st May 1918.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.
Mr. Firth’s name has been inscribed on the Morpeth Public School Honour Roll, Newcastle Surf Club & Life-Saving Brigade Honor Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Junction Soldiers' Monument.
I have placed poppies at Les’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
