Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
70 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 22nd February 1952, Private Charles David Matthews, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1859), boilermaker (Rodgers Bros, Newcastle, N.S.W.), from 1 Arthur Street, Linwood, Newcastle, New South Wales and 37 Lewis Street, Maryville, N.S.W. and 18 Railway Street, Wickham, N.S.W., father of two, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 61. ANGLICAN 1-06. 122.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 7th May 1890 to David M and Eliza Matthews; husband of Catherine Harding Matthews nee Bassett (married 1911, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1921, sleeping here, 31 years a widower), Charles enlisted March 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 13.7.1917 (GSW left foot, mild), 7.5.1918 (GSW left arm, severe), Charles was invalided home February 1919, being discharged on the 25th July 1919.
Mr. Matthews’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Federated Society of Boilermakers & Iron Shipbuilders of Australia, Newcastle Branch, No.4 Honor Roll, Newcastle Federated Society of Boilermakers Roll of Honour and the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (2), photo, unveiled on the 24th May 1917, 192 names inscribed, photo courtesy of Ed Tonks OAM.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Charles’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
