James Lumsden, a farmer from Clarendon Victoria, enlisted in September 1916 and disembarked Plymouth England during November 1916. He was was sent to France 20 December 1916 and was taken on strength of the 39th Battalion in the field 11 February 1917.

James was mortally wounded during the attack at Messines, 7 June 1916.  (Gunshot wounds to the head, lumbar region and abdomen). He died from his severe wounds the next day in the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station 8 June 1917.

His older brother, 4536 Pte. John Walls Lumsden , 58th Battalion AIF was killed in action 2nd September, 1918, age 33.
