JOHN WALTER BUTT
JOHN WALTER BUTT (1885-1950) born at Sutton, son of William and Elizabeth Butt nee Boyd. A farmer from Ainslie via Queanbeyan, he had enlisted on October 13th, 1917 at Queanbeyan as Private 53690, 13th battalion, and completed the paperwork at Liverpool. Originally inducted into H Company, 1st Infantry Depot at Liverpool for training and sailed for Europe on board the HMAT D 60 Field Marschall on June 19th. 1918. appointed Acting Lance Corporal at Codford on August 9th.. HMAT Field Marschall was a captured vessel, and added to the Australian fleet for the duration. The Battalion was sent to France in January 1919 but then he was sent back to England for treatment at Paddington Military Hospital, London for Disordered Action of the Heart in 1919. was listed for return to Australia on July 1st, 1919 on board the HMAT Frankfurt. He received his discharge from the 13th Battalion on September 5th, 1919. His medals were the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. [DAVIS OF GOUNYAN - ROLL OF HONOUR - BM Pittman]
