Sydney was the fourth of nine children of Walter James Mitchell (b1890 in Delorraine, Tasmania) and Paulene Wishart (b1891 in Perth, WA). Walter (a Butcher) and Paulene married in 1911 in Perth WA where they settled and raised their family. Walter had arrived in WA with his parents and siblings in 1892.
Sydney was a Butcher in Perth WA in 1941 when he married Grace Margaret Howson (b1921 in Perth, WA). In March 1942 Sydney enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:W60055) and was attached to 55 Anti Aircraft Battery when he was Discharged in December 1945. Brothers Walter and Roy also served in WWII.
Sydney and Grace divorced and Sydney lived in Perth WA with his mother and brother Walter. Sydney worked as a Bottler and Machinist and died in 1975. Grace remarried in 1949 and died in 1989.
