54 years ago today, on the 16th April 1971, Private (later Staff Sgt, WWII) William Herbert Morrissey, referred to as Bill, 1st Australian Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron (Reg No-52766), dairy farmer from Denman, New South Wales and Virginia Street, Denman, N.S.W. (1940) and Martindale, N.S.W. (1951) and Muswellbrook, N.S.W. and Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 71. CATHOLIC 3-94. 43.

Born at Muswellbrook, New South Wales on the 27th June 1899 to James, died tragically 16.6.1919, Denman, N.S.W., age 49 and Margaret Mary Morrissey, died 19.8.1948, Denman, N.S.W., age 80?, mother of 6?, sleeping at Denman Cemetery; husband of Margaret Mary Morrissey nee?, married?, died 7.1.1992, district unknown, age 89, sleeping here, Bill enlisted on the 1st May 1918 at Denman, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on the 10th June 1918.
Disembarked Suez 7.7.1918.

Admitted to hospital 7.9.1918 (mumps).

Commenced return to Australia 15.5.1919.

Bill arrived home on the 4th July 1919, being discharged on the 19th July 1919.

Mr. Morrissey’s name has been inscribed on the Muswellbrook Soldiers' Memorial and the Denman War Memorial and Remembrance Park.

I have placed poppies at Bill’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Also served 2nd A.I.F., enlisted-8.8.1940, 11th & 31st Garrison Battalions, Service No-N77280, S/SGT, discharged 15.8.1948.
