William was the eldest of three children of Richard Mahoney (born 1865 in County Cork, Ireland) and Sarah Hannah Hughes (born 1872 in Brisbane, QLD). Richard was a Seaman when he married Sarah in Brisbane in 1896. They settled in Brisbane where they raised their family.
In 1914 William was a Carter in Brisbane, QLD when he married Waitress Margaret (Maggie) Louis (born 1891 in Condong, Murwillumbah, NSW).
William enlisted in the AIF in May 1917 and was a Private (Service No:3404) with 41st Infantry Battalion. He was Discharged in April 1919. Brother Cornelius George (Private, Service No:2846) served in WWI, and William and Cornelius served with the CMF in WWII - William as a Warrant Officer Class II (Service No:Q187351) and Cornelius as a Private (Service No:Q187308). William's son Vincent George served in WWII as a Private (Service No:QX19876) with 1 Coy AASC and died as a PoW at Kanchanaburi in Thailand.
William and Maggie lived in QLD - at Manly, in Brisbane, in a Fettler's Camp on the Logan River and William was employed as a Bottler, Carter, Labourer and Fettler. Maggie died in 1972 and William in 1973.
