Stephen Patrick Devine enlisted and served as Patrick John Ryan. His mother’s maiden name was Ryan. He gave his father as next of kin, Daniel Devine, but named him as a stepfather. He made a will on active service and left everything to his mother, Mary Devine.
His younger brother, 2364A Pte. Thomas Devine 9th Battalion AIF, was 6 months later killed in action in Belgium on 26 March 1918, aged 33.
Another brother, Daniel Devine 49th Battalion AIF, enlisted at the age of 41 and was sent home medically unfit during late 1917.
